Events for CT TRAILS DAY June 3!

FOSI has confirmed a total of 5 events on CT Trails Day, Sat, June 3, at Sherwood Island:

  1. Kayak Paddle, led by Michele Sorensen at 8:15 am;
  2. Bird Walk, led by A.J. Hand and Tina Green at 8:30 am;
  3. Wonder of Flight Interactive Air Show, led by Don Lord and the Country Squires at 10 am;
  4. Archaeology Walk on the new Sherwood Island History Trail led by Dawn Brown and Cece Saunders at 11 am.
  5. a new Ecology/Enviro Walk led by Louis Pietig at 2 pm.

8:15 am      Kayak Paddle

See Sherwood Island from the water! Join us for a morning paddle, led by Michele Sorensen, starting by heading into the salt marsh behind the park while the tide is still high. Then we’ll paddle the length of the Sherwood Island shoreline, west to the entrance of Mill Pond, and return to our launch point on the open beach. Will include a safety demonstration and instructions on safely entering and exiting your boat from deep water.

Bring your own kayak, canoe, or other paddlecraft, as well as a pump/bailer. See www.ctwoodlands.org or www.friendsofsherwoodisland.org for more information, requirements and registration.

8:30 am Bird Walk with A.J. Hand and Tina Green!

Discover the birds of Sherwood Island! Explore the varied habitat and spot species of birds attracted to the island with Bird Photographer A.J. Hand and Tina Green of the CT Ornithological Association. The walk will begin inside the Nature Center at A.J.’s unique “Birds of the Park” exhibit, with photos of land birds, water birds and birds of prey found on the island. On the walk among the birds, various types of habitat will be examined, starting with the man-made Purple Martin houses and then natural types of habitat found in the woods, marshes and beaches.

10:00 am Wonder of Flight Interactive Air Show

2nd Annual Wonder of Flight Interactive Air Show: informative and fun. The Air Show will include numerous giant scale radio controlled model planes, helicopters, gliders and drones, some with wing spans exceeding ten feet. Drones of all kinds will be demonstrated, and there will be an opportunity to fly a model. The Air Show is hosted by the Country Squires, a group of remote controlled aircraft enthusiasts registered with Academy of Model Aeronautics.

11:00 am Archaeology Walk

Join us for an Archaeology Walk on the new Sherwood Island History Trail.  Led by Archaeologists Dawn Brown and Cece Saunders, the walk will include points of interest, terrain, and examining the traces of past inhabitants of Sherwood from 1000 B.C. to the 1940s. The leaders will share findings from recent excavations, including Native American, early settlers, and onion farmers.

2:00   Sherwood Island Ecology and Environment Walk

Fun Walk along Long Island Sound! Discover habitats, inhabitants and special eco features of this waterfront gateway park. Led by longtime park supporter Louis Pietig, the walk will include wetlands, birding locations, coastal forest, naturalizing efforts, viewing platforms, a purple martin enclave, and the many other special features (even the parking lot).
