LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT: April 23, 2016 Dear Members and Friends of Sherwood Island: The time is here to feel the excitement of all of the wonderful things going on at Sherwood Island State Park and renew your membership. May is membership month! The reconstruction of the Pavilion is complete and is ready for picnics and events with family and friends. Come to the Friends' Annual Meeting on Sunday May 22, 1916 at 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Nature Center in the Park. We are delighted to have as our guest speaker Sarah Crosby, Director of Harborwatch at Earthplace, who will share her expertise in the ecology of salt marshes. Learn about the annual Connecticut Trails weekend events ( particularly  how you can discover more about Sherwood Island through a day of varied walking, kayaking, and other participatory events including the "Wonder of Flight - from Birds to Drones" on June 4. Learn how you can participate in Project 100 Trees for 100 Years aimed at replenishing the Park with trees, shrubs and grasses to address the losses from major storms. We will be awarding the True Friend Award to Louis Pietig for his 20 years of substantial participation in the Friends organization. As a Board Member he led many advocacy and fundraising efforts for the Park. Also at the Annual Meeting (which is open to the public, but only Members may vote), we will conduct a short business meeting and elect officers and directors (see proposed slate).  It is time to renew your membership in the Friends of Sherwood Island State Park, or to join our ranks if you are not currently a member. Your membership application is enclosed---check boxes to let us know your skills and volunteering interests. The generous donations from the Friends support needed improvements to the Nature Center and a full summer intern program. Interns join the Nature Center Director to offer fun and educational programming throughout the summer, as well as outreach programs about the coastal environment for visitors to Earthplace, the Beardsley Zoo and other venues. See our dynamic website ( or follow us on Facebook ( throughout the summer for activities and programs in the Park. Be a part of the excitement at Sherwood Island by renewing your membership or joining the Friends for the first time! Donations over $50 include membership so please complete the membership form and mail your check OR go to the Friends' website and complete the on line form and submit it using your Pay Pal account for payment.
